Holmdel Seeks to Lower Speed Limit on Route 520
Lowering the speed to 40 mph will be safer for recreational users taking advantage of the paved trail system linking Cross Farm Park to Thompson Park in Lincroft.
Holmdel Township will ask county officials to consider lowering the speed limit on Route 520.
They anticipate that improvements to the paved 5 mile perimeter trail at Thompson Park on Route 520, near the Holmdel's Cross Farm Park, will attract more recreational users.
The governing body agreed Thursday to authorize the township administrator to contact the county Dept. of Transportation and ask that Route 520's speed limit be lowered to 40 mph, from 45 mph, near Thompson Park.
The 45 mph segment is situated between two 40 mph sections or the roadway, which is also known as Newman Springs Road in Lincroft and Main Street in Holmdel.
They also agreed to request a pedestrian crossing on Route 520 for the safety of residents who may seek to cross the busy road.
According to Holmdel officials, the Township requested a reduction of the speed limit from 50 mph to 40 mph many years ago. The County decided to lower it to 45 mph.
The changes were suggested by Committeeman Larry Fink.

I see no reason to lower the limit. Thompson park users tend to stay on the Thompson park side of the road. The area is mostly non-residential, and there are few houses from which you can walk there. We already lowered limits on a number of roads without much benefit.

Lower the limit. It doesn't make sense to change the speed limit up and down within about one mile. I've driven that stretch. Speed limits are routinely exceeded. Westbound, cars come barreling into the village area at 50 and take their time slowing down. Eastbound they cross the Lincroft line at 50 and compete for the single lane as the road narrows. The limit is 40 to the east and west and it should be 40 throughout.

I agree with the lower limit for several reasons. It helps retain the sleepy-town atmosphere; many drivers exceed speed limits so a lower limit will slow them down to where we really want them; it retains one speed limit throughout. I wish they'd do the same on Crawfords Corner Road....

Ive personally seen more than 5 crashes on that road mostly all young people i think lowering it would be safer for the new drivers heading to the college
