Rt. 520 Emergency Closure Wednesday Night

Overnight repairs will close the road and impact traffic.

Newman Springs Road/Route 520 will close between Rt. 34 and the intersection of Conover and Boundary Roads tomorrow night.

According to a Monmouth County release, the road will close from 10 p.m. Wednesday night until 5 a.m. Thursday morning for pump work near Hop Brook.

A culvert, which channels water, under Newman Springs Road is blocked and water is building up on the upstream, the release said.

“By pumping out the water that has accumulated, we will avoid a spillover and, if temperatures fall, a freezing condition on the roadway,” said Freeholder Thomas A. Arnone, liaison to the county’s public works and engineering department. “The pump out is also needed before replacement of the blocked culvert can begin.”

Detours:

  • From Marlboro, motorists traveling east on Newman Springs Road will be detoured south on Boundary Road to Crine Road; travel east on Crine Road to Dutch Lane Road; turning left onto Conover Road and return to State Highway 34.
  • From Colts Neck and Holmdel, motorists traveling west on Newman Springs Road will be detoured south on State Highway 34 to Conover Road (Colts Neck); turn right onto Conover Road continuing to Dutch Lane Road to Crine Road; turning north onto Boundary Road and returning to Newman Springs Road.

“The county has applied for an emergency permit approval from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection to replace the 50-year old culvert,” county engineer Joseph Ettore said. “We are optimistic that this project will move forward in a timely manner.”

This "Emergency" has been building up for 5 months! Frankly it seemed they were waiting for the road to wash out. Now we have to wait for the DEP before a common sense repair is made. This snafu is a good argument against consolidation of services
