Sommerfest at the German School

A Sommerfest celebration at the German School of Monmouth County, which meets in the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Holmdel.

The German School of Monmouth County  Sommerfest attendees crowned three winners of the first cake competition held during the school’s annual year-end school celebration on Sunday, May 22 in Holmdel. The event featured student performances, a gift auction and 50/50.  

Attendees anointed Tanja Subjek of Wall the inaugural “Cake Queen” for her Flourless Chocolate Crème Torte. Doris Knowles of Jackson receiving the second prize for her traditional “Bienenstich,” honey cake. And Martin Birk’s Strawberry Biscuit Roll was awarded third place.  

Each winner received a gift basket for their winning entry with first prize donated by David Burke Fromagerie in Rumson, second prize from The Lusty Lobster in Highlands and third prize basket of Margarita cheer donated by a German School of Monmouth County family. 

Students performed “The Revenge of the Numbers,” a play in three acts about the disappearance of numbers when two girls decide math homework is a waste of time and numbers are unnecessary.  The resulting bad dream shows that a day without numbers – from alarm clocks to telling time to celebrating a birthday with cake and presents would impossible.  Pre-school through adult classes took part in speaking and singing in German to tell the story. 

“Each year our Sommerfest gets better as students demonstrate what they’ve learned throughout the year,” said Principal Michaela Greco of Atlantic Highlands.

“This year we were particularly thrilled to announce that our students have achieve 90% proficiency on exams administered by the the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG),  and excellent scores on Agency for German Schools Abroad  DSD A2 tests, which prepare students for the SAT II German and AP German tests, as well as study abroad should they choose to do so.”  

Students also received recognition and books from the German Consulate I New York City for achievement in learning German.

The non-profit German School of Monmouth County (www.germanschoolmc.org), provides cultural programs and language enrichment classes for babies and toddlers with a mommy & me music classes, a pre-school program, as well as programs geared to native and non-native speakers for children, teens and adults.  The organization fosters global understanding and prepares students for the 21st century workforce.
