Special Delivery: BRSA's Wind Turbine Parts Arrive in Newark

As road permits are gathered and court fights continue over construction of the BRSA's $7.7 million wind turbine, parts of the wind turbine are arriving in Newark.

Nearly all of the General Electric manufactured components that will be used to construct an industrial wind turbine on the site of the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority (BRSA) in Union Beach have been delivered to a warehouse in Port Newark, New Jersey, said BRSA Executive Director Robert Fischer.

The parts are manufactured in different locations in the United States.

The three 110-foot long blades were driven along state highways from Texas in three specially-designed truck with a front and back steering wheel, for navigating turns. The heavy nacelle, or generator, along with the nose cone, was sent up from Pensacola on a ten-axle truck. The tower sections were shipped from Iowa.

And on a truck today -- somewhere in New York or Pennsylvania -- are the base and mid-section, said Fischer.

The parts are being stored in Newark as the BRSA awaits final approval for a permit to travel along Union Avenue, Florence Avenue and Ninth Street from State Highway Route 36 through the borough of Union Beach.

The BRSA said it has already met several times with utilities along the route, such as the phone, gas and electric companies, to identify and obstacles or problems.

If the borough's transportatoin permit is granted, the BRSA has just to obtain the county's permit. If all goes as planned, the construction of the GE turbine by the Conti Group of Edison could begin in November, said Fischer.

But then there is the legal fight in the courts. In early August, a state Superior Court denied a motion by the BRSA to halt construction of the turbine, and litigation is continuing through the court's appeals process.

The BRSA is behind schedule in its plan to erect a 260-foot tall industrial wind turbine in order to reduce its energy costs. (The height of the turbine, from the ground to the top tip of one of its three blades, is 380 feet.)

"It was supposed to be up by January of this year," said Fischer. "As it gets delayed, we're losing the generation of electricity by the turbine."

The BRSA says its wind turbine will reduce the cost of sewer service to end users in the towns it services: Union Beach, Holmdel, Keyport, Hazlet, Keansburg, Matawan, Aberdeen and parts of Marlboro.

But the turbine's location has upset local residents who fear its effects on their health and property values. Some of its own member towns have passed resolutions opposing it.

what a shame they are falling for this scam. This is more to do with accelerated deprecation and feel good environmentalism, than really doing something. The lawsuits and having to buy nearby houses will more than offset any potential money. Go read about fox island wind turbine or Falmouth wind turbines. Once the harm is realized and the money is spent these become very disruptive for the towns.

Since the courts won't let them build right now, their next ploy is to try and get this monstrosity delivered so they can claim 'Since we already have it here we should be allowed to continue.'
It's time the county or state stepped in and audited this bunch. Putting so much of ratepayers money at risk, the residents health and property values, and the many endangered species that have been documented there. It is time for the towns to reappoint DIFFERENT commissioners. It is time for yet another Authority to be closely looked at. It is never good enough to blindly accept what the wind industry dictates and ask the next question. If they claim there will be savings QUANTIFY IT. If they say there are no health risks show us the doctors that actually EXAMINED patients. Using made up words like NOCEBO didn't work for Ciba-Geigy in Toms River and it should not be allowed to stand here.
BOYCOTT GE who refused to sell in Sea Girt and Bayonne but are trying to dump their junk science project on the people of the Bayshore.

Frank "Boss" Wells is having his dream come true if they prevail in court...and apparently even if they lose. Boss Wells and his comrades have the audacity to deliver the turbie in spite of the courts and the will of the people. Boss Wells, Robber Fischer and attorney Grand Nada were warned by a judge that delivery of the turbine cannot be used as a legal defense if they end up losing in court, yet they keep marching forward. Jail time is what should be called for at the BRSA, They are criminals. A sewage authroity and its bosses should not be more powerful than local and county givernments....they perfom a service, that's it!!!!!!

The BRSA has proceeded fraudulently from the very start with their wind turbine. They applied for and received ARRA stimulus funds prior to owning the land they needed to build it. I'd probably go to jail for that maneuver, but they got away with it. Then they seized the 1/2 acre via Eminent Domain against the will of the people and several borough governments. Now they are trying to truck the turbine with loads as heavy as 80 tons over 4 ton roads - before they have prevailed in court, which they very well may not. The BRSA commissioners are crooks and thieves working in their own self interest and not in the interest of the towns they represent. Rahway and the Passaic Valley Sewerage Authorities both squandered millions of ratepayer and taxpayer money, only revealed through outside audits. IT IS TIME FOR THE COUNTY OR STATE TO AUDIT THE BRSA!!!!! And any mayor who reappoints their commissioners is INSANE! Fire and replace the commissioners today!!! Also, let's organize a class action suit if they truck their boondoggle in.

Who has the biggest pockets?? BRSA has ultimately won. Although our towns will eventually obtain some rate relief, the whole process including open communication has been far from perfect. Holmdel's commitee BRSA appointments and rate structure should require a closer review. Think Union Beach is stuck!

"Man... hath by nature a power... to preserve his property- that is his life, liberty. and estate- against the injury and attempts of other men." John Locke
The BRSA is an agency out of control. The people who appointed them have clearly said that they want no part of this wasteful boondoogle that threatens their life, limb, and financial well being. Despite these facts, and continuing court challenges the crony bullies of the BrSa are proceeding with their plans to ship in the "wheel of plunder." The commissioners should be held financially responsible for their attempt to circumvent the judicial process!
